Connect Gmail to Claude (Settings → Connectors), then have it audit your inbox before it changes anything: top senders, what share is marketing versus real people, and which senders cost you the most time. Only then let it create labels. Keep two rules: audit first, act second, and Claude makes lists while you press the buttons.
0138,412 unread emails
Email is the one pile that refills itself while you sleep. You can spend a Sunday on it and by Wednesday it looks like you never touched it. So I stopped looking.
That works until you miss something that matters. Mine was a brand deal: a follow-up from a company I'd pitched sat unopened for eleven days under a wall of promo emails. By the time I found it, they'd booked someone else.
So I connected Gmail to Claude. It read everything, invented categories that fit my inbox, labeled it, listed who was wasting my time, and gave me filter rules to keep it that way. I didn't touch a single email while it worked.
02The one setup step
Open Claude, go to Settings → Connectors, and connect Gmail. That's the whole setup.
Once connected, Claude can read, search, create labels and apply them. Three things it deliberately can't do, and this is the good news: it can't delete an email, it can't unsubscribe you from anything, and it can't send mail you haven't seen. The worst case is a messy set of labels you delete in ten seconds.
03The two safety rules
Audit first, act second. You list, I decide.
- Audit first, act second. The first thing you ask for changes nothing. It just looks. You read what it found, then you let it move.
- You list, I decide. Claude never unsubscribes, replies or marks anything read. It produces lists. You press the buttons. That one line is the difference between a tool and a liability.
04Start with an audit that changes nothing
Ask Claude to look at the last 12 months without changing a thing and report back:
- your top senders by volume, and how many of their emails you actually open
- what share of your mail is real people, notifications, marketing, receipts and everything else
- the handful of senders creating the most noise for the least value
It's the step that made me understand my own inbox for the first time.
05The six prompts
The exact prompts I ran, in order, from the audit to labels to the permanent filter rules, are in the full post.
Copy-paste prompts for the audit, custom labels, the time-waster hit list and the filters that keep it clean, all written so Claude never deletes or unsubscribes anything.
